“ARION” participated as Coordinator of the National Marine Wildlife Species Surveys Network for the Cetacean Surveys Management Team of Greece together with other National Surveys Networks of other countries in the international scientific conference of the European Cetacean Society (ECS) in the Azores on 9-13 May 2025.
In the framework of the ECS, 2025 Conference, Ms Elena Akritopoulou Scientific Member of “ARION” and PhD in Molecular Ecology of Marine Mammals of the University of Thessaly, represented ‘ARION’ at the important seminar “Euthanasia”. The workshop was organized by Professor Dr. Karen Stockin and researcher Dr. Rebecca Boys of the Cetacean Ecology Research Group of Massey University, New Zealand.
In the framework of this intense and specialized scientific workshop, the main National Marine Mammal Exploitation Networks of each country with long expertise gathered and addressed the issue of euthanasia, allowing each network to document issues and solutions, offering a fruitful reflection and exchange of ideas with the aim of possibly creating a global strategy towards such a sensitive issue but, in some circumstances, a necessary veterinary practice for the welfare of cetaceans found on land. The national vector networks that took part in the workshop included the UK, Ireland, France, Canary Islands, Portugal, Azores, Spain, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, America, Australia, Australia, Egypt, South Africa and New Zealand.
