The situation today in Greece with regard to the training of veterinarians and other marine mammal specialists in the management, care, first aid, biology and ecology of marine mammals is limited and is based only on the continuous and tireless effort of “ARION”.
Since its creation in 2002, ARION has dealt with more than 1500 cases of marine mammal strandings in Greece. A small but experienced team of volunteer veterinarians and scientists to date implements and coordinates the rescue, first aid and rehabilitation activities.
More than 150 veterinarians throughout the island and coastal Greece participate in the “ARION” extortion network. In addition, and in cooperation with other NGOs, the ARION network of veterinarians responds with first aid, veterinary support, necropsies and sampling in cases of other marine species such as the Mediterranean seal, the sea turtle and seabirds.
