6/12/2022 Injured striped dolphin washed ashore alive in Thermaikos Gulf, North Aegean Sea in Greece but ended up despite rescue efforts
On the afternoon of December 6, 2022, the professor of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the AUTH, Mrs. Anastasia Komnenou and ARION and the Animal Rescue and Defense Team were informed from the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki and Michaniona, about the stranding of a dolphin in the shallows of the KAAU area Aghia Triada, of the Municipality of Thermaikos, Northern Aegean Sea, in Greece.
Appropriate instructions were given to the port authorities of Michaniona and Thessaloniki, where port officers went to the spot and at the same time members of the ARION Veterinarian Network (Mrs. Anastasia Komnenou) and the rescue team (Mr. Stelios Geronimakis, Mrs Aliona Gerasimova and Diver Dimitris Marnasidis) rushed to the shore, for first aid and treatment of the dolphin.
The dolphin was a young, female, striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), that presented shortness of breath, difficulty in swimming, neurological symptoms, while at the same time she had a serious injury to her fluke. Despite the rescue efforts, the striped dolphin ended up and was transferred to the Veterinary School of AUTH for a necropsy and sampling in order to ascertain the causes of its death.
We thank the brave men of the port authorities of Michanionas and Thessaloniki as well as the volunteer veterinarians and rescuers who selflessly and in difficult weather conditions were able to immediately intervene in the incident.
