NETWORK OF VOLUNTEER VETERINARIANS
In 2002 “ARION” put into operation for the first time in the country the “Network of Volunteer Veterinarians”, in order to respond more effectively to the increased needs of managing cetacean extinction incidents in our country and at the same time to support the “Panhellenic Network of Volunteer Cetacean Rescue Volunteers”. An experienced team of veterinarians and scientists coordinates and implements the rescue, first aid and reintegration of cetaceans.
In addition, and in cooperation with other NGOs, the “ARION” Volunteer Veterinarians Network responds with first aid, veterinary support, necropsies and sampling in cases of other marine wildlife species such as the Mediterranean seal, the sea turtle and seabirds.
More than 150 veterinarians from all over the island and coastal Greece participate in the “ARION” Volunteer Veterinarians Network. In the Aegean, 7 members cover the Dodecanese, 5 the Cyclades, 11 in the North Aegean, 8 in all prefectures of Crete, 6 in the Ionian, 1 in the Sporades, 3 in Cyprus and 110 in various coastal areas of the mainland.
The “ARION” network also supports all environmental organizations nationwide that deal with the rescue and care of wildlife species, contributing in a mutual way to the immediate, correct and specialized response to incidents as well as to the strengthening of partnerships and saving resources.
